Liposuction

Top 5 risks for liposuction candidates

It is always important to consider the major risks of cosmetic surgery before having anything done. Outside of the standard surgical risk associated with anaesthesiology, there are 5 major issues which pose a risk to your ongoing health that are specific to liposuction surgery.

1. Blood Clots

Blood clots form as the result of poor circulation, and inadequate physical activity. The danger of developing a blood clot is that it can break lose from the vein, typically in the legs, and travel to the lungs resulting in death. You can lower your risk factor for blood clots by returning to normal activities as soon as possible after surgery. Trying to walk a little daily is absolutely key. Also, if you are taking a hormonal birth control, consider discontinuing its use during the month of your surgery. The hormones used to control menstrual cycles significantly increase a woman’s risk of blood clots.

2. Shock, resulting from blood dilution

These risks are especially high during Tumescent liposuction or when more than 11 lbs of fat is removed from the body. In these cases, fluid can enter the blood stream during these procedures and literally water down the blood. It is because of this that large value liposuction is not typically recommended.

3. Bowl perforation

Though this does not happen often, it must be considered that the abdominal wall houses major internal organs, and that the surgeon is using a perforation device in their back yard. It is possible that major internal organs can be damaged during the process, resulting in the need for major medical surgery. This risk can be significantly lowered by using a surgeon who is highly qualified. Make sure that he specializes in the type of liposuction you are having performed, and that he is very experienced.

4. Lidocaine reaction

Lidocaine is typically injected during a liposuction procedure. This poses a risk because there are no standards for how much is too much. Those with poor liver function (people who are or have been alcoholics, or who have otherwise damaged livers) may not be able to process the drug which has been linked to liposuction death.

5. Abnormal body contour

While this is certainly the least serious of the top five it is also the most common. Many people who have liposuction surgery find that something did not go as expected. They have lumps, bumps, and dents that they did not have before. Where as this complication does not pose any physical threat, it can leave you very dissatisfied with the outcome of your cosmetic surgery.
